Oki – welcome to www.IksokapiMagazine.com
An online publication created for Indigenous women, by Indigenous women in North America
Oki – welcome to the December 2014 issue of Iksokapi Magazine. This is the 12th and final issue of www.IksokapiMagazine.com 2014 and OMG I must say this has been one of the best experiences of my life. As owner and editor of this one of kind online publication created specifically for Indigenous women, I am extremely blessed to have had this amazing opportunity to share my creation with all of you. Thank you to everyone who has supported the magazine including the readers, writers, photographers, advertisers and the many inspiring individuals who took the time share their story and promote the magazine with their networks including this month’s Iksokapi Profile Maya Many Grey Horses (interview coming soon) and interview with FSIN Chief Perry Bellegarde.
This journey has not been easy but your help and contribution made the first year possible and I look forward to what 2015 has to offer. I also have to acknowledge my web guy David Barnes who took the time to help make my dream of publishing my own magazine – www.IksokapiMagazine.com – a reality courtesy of WordPress. Your wisdom and patience will always be appreciated and never be forgotten, thanks a bunch and I look forward to working with you in the new year. I have learned so much about the program and have expanded my skill set in the area of web design which has allowed improvements to the magazine one month at a time. I am also working towards expanding my business to help others who would like to create and manage their own websites so contact me if this applies to you, I would love to help.
One of the great things about putting together www.IksokapiMagazine.com is the incredible in-kind support received from everyone including all writers and photographers, it goes to show that not everyone has to be paid to do the right thing. I will never forget that and in time will repay all of you including my mom in hugs and prayers and maybe a trip to Cabo. (if budget allows lol) I also want to thank those of you who have passed on story ideas and upcoming features, I always appreciate the info since I cannot be everywhere at once. The focus this past year was on generating content and building an audience which made it possible to advertise businesses, events, scholarships and job postings for free as our thank you. I also wanted to stay true to the original intent of helping others and will continue to offer many free opportunities in 2015.
One day when I am rolling in the dough ($$$$) I can look back at the publication’s humble beginnings to keep me grounded and to inspire those who have a dream with the fact that you don’t need a whole lot of cash to make them come true however hard work and dedication is required. With that said, I would like to focus the new year on becoming financially sustainable and am on the look out for sponsors and advertisers so if you would like to promote your business in this one of kind publication, contact me immediately. The magazine offers a variety of advertising and sponsorship packages tailored to meet any budget. Your financial contributions will make it possible to pay writers and photographers as well as marketing www.IksokapiMagazine.com to a larger audience AND your company will have a unique and amazing portfolio that supports Indigenous Women in North America.
Last but not least I have to give much thanks to my close friends and family for supporting my dream not only financially but in other areas of my life; to pick me up when I think I am too tired to go on, to keep me laughing and most importantly for always showing me the love, I love you too! Aside from being a mom to Miss Ariel and Owner/Editor of www.IksokapiMagazine.com, I have also been working on a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Saskatchewan and have had various contracts this past year to pay the bills which has made very little time for anything else.
My hard work has and will continue to pay off, (as mother often reminds me) and I know one day www.IksokapiMagazine.com will not only be my dream job, but a career that will sustain itself and my family. I hope you enjoy the publication as much as I love creating it. I would love to hear your feedback so drop me a line at Iksokapi@gmail.com or follow us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Seasons greetings to all of you on Santa’s naughty and nice list. Much love, peace and respect…see you in 2015!
