HEALTH: Dawn Fox, a super busy mother of two, wifey and career woman made a serious decision to improve her overall health and wellbeing that resulted in weight loss, healthier eating habits and an amazing attitude. She shares her inspirational story that began one year ago this month which has since transformed her body, mind and soul with no plans of looking back.
Tell me a little about yourself and why you decided to make a change to your health?
I am a proud Cree/Shushwap woman, who would love to be 10 years younger and more fit as I was then, but alas, nope!
You get older, have children & your metabolism slows down & you get comfortable in a comfy lifestyle. One day you look in the mirror and say, WOW… as much as I love food, junk food, sweets and adult bevvies, I also love myself and need to start taking care of myself, I have children who need me in their life and I want to be in theirs as long as possible.
Then you really look at yourself, and realize you never shop for yourself anymore because you’re in larger sizes and get discouraged in that fitting room and the only one who can make those changes is you!
In my eyes I saw overweight, unattractive, discouragement and self-pity… ALL of which I know I am not, but tell that to the reflection looking back at you.
I made a decision to change, change my whole outlook on that reflection and get my butt in gear & JUST get at it!! (and I have a really nice butt now btw)
What goals did you achieve this past year?
This past year I dropped close to 20 lbs, gained muscle mass and increased my overall fitness regime of weights and endurance and am still working on toning up some more problem areas, and in time will achieve those goals.
What is your favourite healthy food to eat?
I like to cook from scratch. Balance out meals with a Protein, carb and veggies for every meal, but at times you can’t, like spaghetti night or cheat with a pizza night. I like most meals I cook, call me biased but I eat only what I like and cook accordingly, we have: Slow cooked Chicken or Pork with rice or noodles, roasted veggies or grilled asparagus or zucchini and mushrooms/ baked lean pork or chicken meatballs in panko bread crumbs topped with a dollop of red sauce and Parmesan cheese, perogies/ baked potatoes/ baked garlic white fish with crusted ranch and dill …. just to name a few.
What is your favourite cheat meal, if any?
Home-made flat bread pizzas, loaded with ham, pineapple and mushrooms, SOOO addictive and one of my faves!
When it comes to eating well what are your top 3 recommendations?
PORTION CONTROL, PORTION CONTROL, PORTION CONTROL….. and balancing out your food groups. Healthy snacking if you crave in between snacks – I love raw veggies n low-fat dip in the afternoons, or fruit mid mornings, yogurt, protein bars and LOTS OF WATER.
Did you have to alter your eating patterns to accommodate your family?
I haven’t gone food prep crazy, to each their own, I just watch what I eat, and portion it out, and make meals we all like without separating it to accommodate just me or just them.
What is your favourite form of exercise to do and why?
Side weights and ab/core exercises. My muffin top has melted off and I actually have abs! They are making an appearance after a LONG time being held in captivity.
Do you work out at home or at a gym?
Sometimes non-weighted exercises at home, but majority of my workouts are done at the gym, AND have been out of the women’s only workout room for quite awhile, as I am no longer shy to sweat it out in the co-ed area.
What is your best piece of advice for those just starting to exercise?
It takes Time, Determination, Patience and motivation to keep going. Results don’t happen overnight and it can get discouraging, but once you see for yourself all the hard work you are doing starting to pay off, you will want to keep going, a reward in itself.
Do it for yourself, no-one else and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t – You CAN!
If you need motivation – start with a trainer, if you don’t want to go alone – get a gym buddy, both will benefit, if you prefer to go it alone – then like I was, I just went and worked out. I have a workout side-kick now, who’s started coming with me. She has an upcoming wedding and wants to WOW the guests and be in shape for herself and her family… She is doing amazing and her results are starting to show and progress, & now, like me, loves gym time and hates missing gym days!
What is your goal for this year?
Keep going, I’m not quite where I want to be yet, but know I will get there, as long as I believe I can and will.
How did you manage to integrate this healthy lifestyle into your life?
I make time, even when I don’t feel up to it sometimes but schedules are worked around and adapted to, and this is ME time, so I also enjoy that I get some time to myself to do what I like doing, and the next day sore muscles remind me as well.
What motivates you to continue with this lifestyle?
MY RESULTS, feeling good, looking good, and finally clothes shopping! Knowing that I did this for me & I was able to make this difference in my life, and it has been a very positive one.
