Interview with Mikailah Thompson
What inspired the family to host an annual basketball tournament in his honor?
I decided to start planning the tournament a couple of months after his passing. My main purpose was that I wanted his name to continue to flourish in a positive way and in a way that he would have wanted. Although I had never done anything close to organizing a sporting event, it was something I was clearly passionate about which kept me busy and, in a way, it became my own way of grieving. I knew how quickly I decided to take on this project therefore I told his family what I wanted to do and asked permission if it was ok to do so. They gave me the ok, so I started working multiple jobs to pay for the event and started making calls. After the first year, I was surprised how well it turned out. It was a great feeling to see his close friends and family in one place honoring him as well as those who did not know of him and wanted to.
When and where is the next the next tournament?
The next tournament will be held during the weekend of July 6th through the 8th of this year at Metropolitan State University located in downtown Denver, CO.
How can people register their team to play in the next tournament?
All teams will be able to register at dybbasketball.com. All information in regard to the event as well as donating will be online.
How has the tournament grown over the last four years?
I have been extremely grateful for the progression that has been made over the passed four years. Since the first, we have grown each year in the number of teams, added a women’s bracket, and now a youth basketball clinic. Each year I hope to achieve some goal that I have set forth and thanks to all the players and their family and friends, they continue to make it possible.
What can people expect at the next tournament?
I am holding high expectations of change regarding the youth clinic. 2017 was our first year doing it but it was a last-minute decision. It was organized within just a few weeks, but we had a good number of kids who participated, and I felt as though they deserved even more. So, this year I am making sure the clinic will be a bigger and better than the previous year.
