Hairstylist: Tahnee M. with Spasation in West Edmonton Mall
by Tahnee McDonald
I am Tahnee M (McDonald) Masterstylist. A Cree/Nakota from the Enoch Cree Nation however I reside on the Paul First Nation. I love to hunt, dance with the women’s traditional at powwows, I bead and love to cook and I love Tae kwon do. Professionally I started off as an aesthetician, but hair and makeup has always been where my heart is. When asked in Grade school what I wanted to be when I grew up I said I wanted to be the president of Canada or someone who does hair. Well Canada does not have a president so here I am a Mastersylist.
I currently work at Spasation in West Edmonton Mall; I am Master stylist with a Diploma in Hair coloring with the Wella Master Colorist program, I rock with hair color. I’m very good with color corrections and can pretty much do whatever you want as long as your hair is in the condition to accept it. I also have a total obsession and love for hair extensions so I also hold a certificate with Great Lengths which is the Crème de la Crème of hair extensions and the method preferred by the rich and famous. Trust me extensions are hot and I do many affordable methods.
Q. What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
A. The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to Create. It’s a blessing to help build someone’s self esteem. I also love the look on my clients face when they see themselves as beautiful for the first time and I’m able to help capture those moments.
Q. Tell me what you think is the biggest challenge in hairstyling?
A. For the most part Hairstyling is a lot of fun. My Challenges are time management. I take pride in my work and I really try to give my Diva’s what they want instead of what I want. However sometimes due to the state of their hair we end up having to find a happy medium through a consultation that at times takes up time and sometimes runs into the next appointment. But my clients know I care about the integrity of their hair and walk out very happy so I’m always forgiven. It gives me a rock star status feeling.
Q. What are the benefits that come with this job?
A. learning all the current trends before the general public, being able to color my clients hair before it’s a trend and my clients feel like they did it first. However I believe a person should feel comfortable with how they wear their hair and trends aren’t always the way to go. I’m a big fan of the classic sexy looks, the kind that make you feel like a woman.
Q. Who are your role models in this industry and why:
A. This is a tough to answer, because there are so many to include making this an all day read. Firstly the late Vidal Sasoon, a pioneer who took styling and cutting to a whole new level, for the older generation of hairstylists. He created what is known today as the wedge bob and he is credited for Mia Farrow’s pixie cut in “Rosemary’s Baby”. A lot of our current haircutting and style trends are based on his techniques. This is why I admire his work; it’s hard not to pay homage to a great one.
Tabatha Coffee is another inspiration to my career, she is a no holds barred kind of woman who inspires me to want to be more and be the best you can be. In her book, It’s Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty, she’s a real hard ass and tells like it is. But you know what we need more stylists with integrity and stylists who take pride in their work in this industry. I believe my Diva’s and Kings (clients) should love their hair when they leave my chair. We stylists need to have a bit more pride in our craft and Tabatha is exactly this and is why she is a role model of mine. You gotta check out her heelsshe wears some pretty hot heels.
My absolute favorite role models are more of a team of stylists, the TIGI team these guys rock. Back in October my salon sent me to Dallas, Texas for the TIGI world release. This was a huge career game changer for me. I was able to sit in on classes from some of the best the industry. I met and was able to take pictures with some members of the TIGI international team and the U.S team based out of New York and last but not least I got to meet the Moscolos who are the Founders of TIGI. TIGI makes hairstyling products such as Bed Head, Catwalk and my favorite “S Factor”. This team of amazing hairstylists is the new generation of Vidal Sassoons. They inspire me to rock out on a daily basis.

Our Philosophy is based on three words that summarize the Spasation concept:
Our clients leave their world of everyday stress and enter a world of Calm, a Spasation calm one that compares to the serenity of a tropical island. Our priority is to ensure that our clients are at peace once in our surroundings. Our consultants roam the oasis catering to their needs while providing exceptional service.
We have achieved significant success in maintaining a common construction theme of our facilities. Using ceramic tile, white oak and brushed silver, curvatures and a modern lighting scheme. We are among the finest day spas in the world.
We have developed a structure so that our clients are able to visit on a regular basis. The program offers a discount on all products and services, a point system, and partner program. Our Holiday and Special occasion packages throughout the year have attracted thousands in purchasing for that loved one.
Q. What qualities do you bring to the job?
A. I’m a people person, a rock star. I’m personable which is imperative for building trust. I conduct a very thorough consultation which makes it easy for my clients and new clients to put their trust in me to deliver amazing divalicous hair and it allows them to relax and enjoy their experience.
I am very confident at what I do and except new challenges on a daily basis. One thing I truly believe is that by being versatile you should never be “just comfortable” at what you do, challenges are what keeps your mind going and allows your creativity to flow. This is an ever evolving industry; what’s here today is gone tomorrow.
Q. What is my greatest strength as a hairstylist?
A. Patience is my greatest strength; in order to be the best at what you do you need patience. I do a lot of corrective colors and a lot of hair extensions and let me tell ya hair extensions are tedious work but well worth the end result.
Q. How would your salon colleagues describe you?
A. They would say I’m fun to be around and say that I’m very skilled and take pride in what I do. They think I have a game face when I’m with my clients, when I apply color or as I’m cutting I have my game face on. When I walk away I have the biggest smile. They would say if you want your hair red go see Tahnee she rocks the reds and she’s your girl if you want the best hair extensions. Check out our website http://www.spasation.com.
I’d like to close off by saying; when I look back at old pictures of our ancestors I can clearly tell they had long healthy hair. Much love and respect to them, they’re hair was so kept and neat. How they managed back in the day totally amazes me. For many today that’s hard to do even with all of our modern conveniences. Which is why they come see me Tahnee M. MASTERSTYLIST.
