Interview with Derek Jagodzinsky:
Tell us about yourself?
I am Native fashion designer Cree decent from Whitefish First Nation (Atikameg) and I have a Bachelors of Design from the University of Alberta and did my internship in New York with fashion designer Michael Kaye Couture. This opportunity provided me with further insight about the business behind fashion from an international perspective while based in New York. This internship also allowed me to fully understand the fine craftsmanship of couture and the art of dressing women of style and class.
Other Academic achievements include studying the history of fashion/design, art classes, and sculpture. As it is important to understand where fashion derived form to know where it is going and I love to learn new things and push my self in anything I do. I love anything creative and love making something out of nothing, give me as twist tie and a garbage bag and ill make you a gown.
What was your inspiration behind your 2014 collection?
This season my inspiration behind my s/s2014 collection was the four direction colors on the Cree medicine wheel that had hand beading done by Native women and a print I made that is Cree syllabic’s which says we will succeed repeated to make a graphic pattern which is a mantra not just for native people for everyone and wanted to make clothes that are wearable for all people to share my culture with everyone . Also I love the 4 direction colors and that they are red, white, yellow and black the colors of all people on this earth. Beauty and diversity is Luxx ready to wear.
I have always been interested in fashion since I can remember I love how fast it is and how it is ever changing and I love being artistic and making something out of nothing and love a challenge & of course I LOVE FASHION
Who is your favorite designer(s)?
Fashion design greats Yves Saint Laurent and Cristóbal Balenciaga to arts and culture and love to mesh things together and create new interesting things.
Do you have a signature style that is incorporated into your designs?
Every season I always try and use very wearable and easy to wear fabrics that you can throw into your suitcase and not worry about ironing and steaming, I use a lot of sport and techno fabrics that are comfortable and modern for the 2014 woman on the go that want to feel comfortable and be effortlessly chic. I love draping off my bust form and really feel I make sculpture for the body and creating in general.
More refined I feel with more direction in my line making wearable effortlessly chic clothing.
