CULTURE – Okii Niksukowaiiks nisto nitanko Nahtosaakii, Niitoh’toh sikskaitsitapi niistopi Iitoonyiopi, Omskooma. Hello friends and relatives my name is Sun Woman, I am from the Blackfeet Nation, I reside in Browning, Montana. I am also from the Navajo Nation and Castilian peoples.
I was given and blessed with the name Sun Woman, My great grandfather Clarence White Grass Sr. named me after the sun people in Arizona where my mother was born. My western name is Shawntyana Bullshoe, I am the eldest of my family, I have one brother Ohmstuckee(Big Mountain) and two sisters, Saypee (Charging through) and Akaka soy yee (Many Sparks). I belong to the Thunder Pipe, Beaver Pipe, Blacktail, Dog Society. I am an elder to the Chickadee Society. I am the first Blackfeet ever to win the title.
Interview with Miss Blackfoot Canada 2015
Where are you from? Browning, Montana
When were you crowned Miss Blackfoot Canada 2015? I was crowned Miss Blackfoot Canada 2015 at the International Peace Pow Wow in Lethbridge, Alberta Canada on March 1, 2015
What were your first thoughts when your name was announced? I was really surprised and shocked. I couldn’t believe they called my name. This is one accomplishment I won’t forget.
How has the experience been so far? My experience so far has been a great honor to serve as an ambassador for the Blackfoot Confederacy and represent at the State, Federal level and International level. The people I meet are so generous and kind Its good to know that I have made new friends along the way.
How did you become involved in the pageant? How I became involved with the pageant is from my mentor Stan Whiteman Sr. He said “ It would be really cool if a Blackfeet girl ran for the title and won”. From their on I thought about it for a couple of days and talked it over with my family thats when I decided that I would run for the title. It was a good experience that helped me have an understanding of what I can get accomplish.
What is your role and responsibilities as Miss Blackfoot Canada 2015? My role and responsibilities as Miss Blackfoot Canada is to represent the title with respect, honor and dignity. Throughout my experience I will share my life time knowledge, language,culture and history that I have come to know along with my family teachings and values.
What do you enjoy most about the experience? I enjoy meeting new and old friends and getting to travel to different places I never thought I would go.
What advice do you have for aspiring Miss Blackfoot Canada contestants?
The advice I give for the aspiring Miss Blackfoot Canada and other girls is, no matter how big or small your dreams are never give up trying, Don’t look back and ask why? look forward and ask why not? because hard work and determination does pay off in the future and hey if plan “A” didnt work out there’s always 25 more letters in the alphabet stay cool and believe in yourself when no one else will.
