OKI – welcome to the summer 2015 issue of www.IksokapiMagazine.com – I am enjoying the warm weather in Treaty 7, (Calgary, Alberta) park hopping with my daughter and working on my last Masters of Ed paper, YES my last one ever!!
As I prepare to embark on the last phase (two classes) of my educational journey with the University of Saskatchewan I am also trying to pencil in some summer fun for my family and I. So far the Calgary Stampede has taken over our lives and will continue to do so until the finals on Sunday. We have also been exploring parks in and around southern Alberta and so far we really like Sandy Beach Park located in Southwest Calgary. Its been a hot summer so don’t forget to stay hydrated.
SHOUT OUT to Noran & Florene Calf Robe (my uncle & aunt) who are first year tipi owners at the Indian Village. It has been a little different not having my grandparents on the grounds everyday but they are enjoying their much deserved retirement especially my grandpa who enjoys watching Stampede on his TV from the comfort of home.
Another SHOUT OUT to my brother Shawn Calf Robe, outrider for the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA), Chuckwagon Driver Kurt Bensmiller, and fellow outrider Wayne Wright who won the Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy and bragging rights as the 2015 Calgary Stampede Aggregate Champions last night after getting the best 8 day aggregate time. Sponsored for the second year in a row by Tsuu T’ina Nation, it is the first time Bensmiller has won the Calgary Aggregate title, congrats Kurt and we wish you all the best in the finals. They will go on to compete in the semi finals tonight so come check it out if you are in Calgary.
Powwow season is also in full swing so feel free to send us your best powwow pics and posters of upcoming powwows which we can publish in a future issue of Iksokapi Magazine. We plan to be onsite for a few of them including the Siksika Nation Fair. See our CULTURE section of the magazine for a complete list of powwows coming up this summer.
Thank you to our increasing list of contributing writers and photographers who help make Iksokapi Magazine possible as well as our many advisors who do a lot of work behind the scenes providing content, ideas and suggestions. Iksokapi Magazine is a work in progress and is always looking for new writers, photographers and artists who want to share their work with our readers. Email email@example.com to get involved or for more information.
And finally if my life was not busy enough, I am currently working on another online magazine – YouthSpeakMagazine.com – created for Indigenous Youth in North America scheduled to come out in the fall so stay tuned for more information. This was inspired by my work as managing editor for New Tribe Magazine, an aboriginal youth magazine which is no longer in circulation as well as numerous requests from community so like I said, stay tuned!
