Siksika Nation Fair 2015
Oki – welcome to the September 2015 issue of Iksokapi Magazine. Summer has been eventful to say the least and flew by as I spent much of it working on the last two classes of my program with the University of Saskatchewan. I am proud to say that I will graduate with 16 of my fellow cohorts on October 24, 2015 with a Master’s of Education degree. I am beyond excited and a tad exhausted from the experience which included a 300 km canoe trip through Treaty 5 and 6 territory with some pretty amazing people including my classmates and my professors; Dr Alex Wilson and Dr. Verna St. Denis. This experience has changed me more than you know so much love, peace and gratitude to everyone who was apart of this journey.
CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Universe 2015 Ashley Burnham (Callingbull) from Enoch First Nation who became the first – First Nations woman and the first Canadian woman to win this illustrious title breaking down barriers for many women in the northern hemisphere. She is wasting no time speaking out on First Nations issues on the international stage and encouraging her peers to fight for their rights and go out and vote in the upcoming federal election. I also have to mention Tahnee M. Hairstylist (huge supporter of Iksokapi Magazine) from Spasation located in West Edmonton Mall who was a crucial member of the glam squad for Mrs Universe 2015. Way to get your talents recognized on the world stage, Iksokapi Magazine salutes you sisters.
The summer included a little bit of the powwow and chuck wagon trail for our family including the Siksika Nation Fair 2015. We also celebrated with my brother Shawn, an outrider with the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) who wrapped up their 2015 season at the end of August as World Title winners with chuckwagon driver Kurt Bensmiller and fellow outrider Wayne Wright who won their first career World Championship by 81 points over reigning World Champion Kirk Sutherland. Tsuu T’ina Nation, who owns the Grey Eagle Resort & Casino near Calgary, Alberta sponsored the Bensmiller racing team for the 2015 season who also won the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby. Good times indeed.
Last but not least SHOUT OUT to all students returning back to school including my daughter Ariel. She is excited to start grade 3, meet up with her friends and to test out her new school supplies which was alway my favourite thing about the first day of school. I wish all students, teachers and supports all the best. I also want to acknowledge all parents with kids who are leaving for college this year. My mom couldn’t listen to Sheryl Crow without crying when I moved to Edmonton during my second year at Grant MacEwan. I can’t help but laugh every time I hear “if it makes you happy..”
She didn’t share this with me till years later but I realized then that my momma rocks because she will always support what I need to do even if it means letting us go to explore the world. No worries parents your kids will still need you, more then they will admit so don’t be afraid to stop in to give a hug, some encouragement, food and laundry soap to help your kid succeed! 🎓 #thanksMom
